2011 - #6 - Ballymena Raceway 22/4/2011 |
What many people will call the traditional start to the season after last week's warm up, the Good Friday meeting at Ballymena Raceway provided big grids of cars and plenty of action.
The big event of the night was the Yokohama tyres championship which seen a full field of 34 cars take the track for heat 1. Heat one featured drama early on with John O'Donovan ending up on his side on the entrance to the back straight which triggered a banger like pile up, taking a number of cars out of the running. Micky McFall took the opening heat win.
McFall seen a reverse of forunes in heat 2 with a spectacular roll on the backstriaght after contact with one of the marker tyres. Fergus Bevan became the next victim of the back straight after coming together with race leader Bobbie Johnston. With only a few laps remaining the race was called giving Johnston the win.
After the heats Johnston qualified pole for the final, joined on the front row by Scottish visitor Robert McDonald, with Tipperary visitor William O'Donovan inside second row, joined on it by Philip Davy. After a manic few laps McDonald had managed to drop down the order to 5th or 6th and by mid race was back at the front and in the lead, from which he went on to take the win, with Stephen McCready runner up and William O'Donovan third.
Davy McKay took a heat and final double in the National Hot Rods World Series Round 9, with Ian McReynolds picking up the other heat win.
Denver Logan took the honours in the Gp 2 Lighting rods for the second week in a row.
